THE
CALLING
Music, Lyrics and Book by Jessa Richer and Shira Bodnar
THE CALLING
The Calling, a new canadian musical by Jessa Richer and Shira Bodnar, is an optimistic, fantastical and queer Canadian tale that is geared toward families, and children and runs roughly 70 minutes in length.
Set in a foggy, soggy, seaside town, The Calling follows a community burdened by the loss of almost a whole generation of children who were vengefully stolen by the ocean as retaliation for the people's overfishing. When we arrive in the Town, it has been years since The Great Loss and there is only one surviving child; an orphan who is raised by the community, and craving for something to change in their lonely world.
Lured by a strange, shadowy figure, the Child is called on an adventure where they finally learn the truth of what happened all those years ago. It is a saga of community, loss, overconsumption, climate change, new beginnings, and how things could change if we can see the world through the optimism of children.
